âBut there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive HERESIES.â 2 Peter 2:1
Â
OK friends, today weâre going to talk about the âHâ word đ± ⊠but it may not be the one youâre thinking of. No. The word I have in mind is one I personally donât like to use often because of my commitment to Christian love which overlooks a multitude of offenses.
Â
Yet, there it is and the topic of FALSE TEACHERS comes up over and over again throughout the Bible. Well, what makes a HERETIC?
Â
The topic came up for me this week while I watching popular teacher ANDY STANLEYâs latest controversial comments on the IRRELEVANCE of the Old Testament for modern Christians đąÂ You can click the link đ to watch my full review of his sermon âŠ.
Â
Nonetheless, we HAVE to draw lines right?? Well, yes we do and thatâs the point of Peterâs instruction in our opening Scripture. He said this because heresies are DESTRUCTIVE. I personally would consider anything HERESY that goes against basic Christian concepts like those laid out in the Apostlesâ and Nicene Creeds, Godâs name and nature (as in the âTrinityâ), Godâs Word as inerrant and infallible AND Godâs Gospel of salvation by FAITH in Jesus, just to keep things simple.
Â
Well, what do you think and MORE importantly how should we respond to our brothers and sisters in Christ when they are walking in MAJOR doctrinal error?? Undeniably, it is our job to preach the TRUE Gospel, both as Christâs church AND as individual believers so donât always look to someone else when God may be looking to you as his difference-maker in your spiritual community!
Â
Application:
What are three basic beliefs that would make you use the âHâ word?
Â
How and when should heretical teachings be confronted?
Â
How could your pastor help you in that process?
