“The disciples … brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd … cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road … [shouting], ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Matthew 21:4-9
Hello friends! Can you believe Resurrection Sunday is ONLY one week away?! In fact, in my newest video (linked below) I talk with Hebrew scholar Keith Johnson about the importance of understanding the language, history and context of the Bible because the ENTIRE BIBLE declares Jesus. In the passage we started with today we see Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey and YES, this act was symbolic to an ancient audience of a king coming to his people and proclaiming piece. IN FACT, this specific instance was prophesied hundreds of years earlier by Israel’s prophet Zechariah, as Matthew explains: “This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: ‘Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey’” (Zechariah 9:9). HOWEVER, things don’t stop there and that’s the point I want to make to you today since the WHOLE OLD TESTAMENT preaches Jesus through the lives of ACTUAL people like Joseph, Joshua, Jonah and David AND through symbols like the sacrificial system where a lamb without blemish (symbolizing Jesus) took away the sins of people. Think about that the next time you pick up an old dusty book that many today consider to be irrelevant, untrustworthy or off-track. IN FACT, the Bible is TRUTH and it speak of Jesus from cover to cover!
Application:
What do the prophecies of the Old Testament mean to you and why?
What does Jesus’ kingly entry say about his death on a cross a few days later?
Can you think of one Old Testament reflection of Jesus?
